Past-life expert starts author on 'Road Back to Heaven'

CLERMONT -- A fictional secret scroll hidden in the Vatican and the spiritual message it reveals fill the pages of Clermont author Linda Lewis' The Road Back to Heaven.

Lewis, 60, called her novel "a fast-paced adventure story."

"The message is one that has the potential to shake the foundations of organized religion," she said.

The 232-page paperback came about after a chance get-together Lewis had with a friend attending a class on psychic phenomena. The teacher, Merwyn Bernstein, was having no luck at writing a book about his experiences hypnotizing people and performing past-life regressions, Lewis said.

So Lewis began writing her own book. The Road Back to Heaven, published by Baycrest Books, was released April 15. Lewis said she talked at length with Bernstein and gleaned ideas from others in penning the book.

It is not the first book Lewis has had published, but it is the first for adults. During the 1980s and '90s, Lewis had 11 young-adult novels published.

Known as the "Linda Series," the novels, which were based on Lewis' diaries and her experiences growing up in Manhattan, follow Linda, the central character, from ages 9 to 18.

"Since they are based on fact, the stories are very true to life, dealing with emotions, the fun and good times as well as the sad and seemingly tragic moments young people experience on the path to adulthood," Lewis said.

By the end of the final "Linda" book, the protagonist is an adult.

"The series came to a natural end," Lewis said. "I had always been interested in metaphysics and spirituality and wanted to write a book in this area but wasn't sure of what direction to take."

Lewis said she would like to continue writing books that deal with spiritual topics.

"Although my book is fiction, perhaps by reading this book people can find comfort and hope, even in times of extreme difficulty, and make it easier to make progress on the long journey that is the road back to heaven," she said.
